Gilsoniteis a naturally occurring hydrocarbon, mined in Kermanshah, Iran. With apurity in excess of 99% it is high in asphaltenes (70%) and compatiblewith all traditional bituminous paving materials. Supplied as a finepowder it is easily added to hot mix asphalt directly into the mixer.Gilsonite dissolves easily in the asphalt to achieve a uniform, easilyworkable asphalt mixture.

Inaddition, laboratory tests and field results show that increaseddeformation resistance can be obtained while the pavement retains muchof its original ductility and ability to resist low temperaturecracking.
